Australia has become the first country in the world to legalise the use of psychedelics to treat some mental health conditions
Approved psychiatrists can now prescribe MDMA to those suffering post-traumatic stress disorder and magic mushrooms for some types of depression. The controversial move has been hailed as a game-changer* by many scientists and mental health experts.
MDMA - also known as the party drug ecstasy - is a synthetic drug that acts as a hallucinogen. It increases the user's energy levels, sensory experiences and distorts their sense of time. Magic mushrooms, which grow naturally, also have hallucinogenic effects due to the active compound psilocybin.
While Australia is the first country in the world to regulate the drugs as medications, clinical trials are also underway in the US, Canada and Israel.
Under the new regulations which became official in Australia on 1 July, approved psychiatrists can prescribe MDMA for post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and psilocybin for depression that has resisted other treatments.

The Metropolitan Transportation Authority has received final federal approval for its congestion pricing plan that would charge tolls to motorists driving below 60th Street in Manhattan.
The plan, the first of its kind in the country, is intended to reduce congestion in Manhattan's central business district. It could take effect as early as April [2024]. The plan would charge cars with an E-ZPass up to $24 for driving below 60th Street during peak hours. Those without an E-ZPass could face tolls of up to $34.50.
Gov. Kathy Hochul applauded the decision.
“Congestion pricing will reduce traffic in our crowded downtown, improve air quality and provide critical resources to the MTA," Hochul said in a statement. "I am proud of the thorough environmental assessment process we conducted, including responding to thousands of comments from community members from across the region. The European Union’s Covid certificate is about to become the world’s digital health pass.
July 1, the EU certificate will become the first building block of the UN World Health Organization’s Global Digital Health Certification Network which will include a range of digital health services. And while the WHO declared in May that COVID-19 no longer constitutes a global health emergency, the international certificate program will protect against future pandemics.
Work on the certification network started last November when the European Commission struck a cooperation deal with the WHO on global health issues. The network was officially launched this month with Stella Kyriakides, the European commissioner for health and food safety announcing that the voluntary certificate program has already been taken up by almost 80 countries.

Allstate has stopped writing new homeowner, condominium and commercial insurance policies in California, the company confirmed to The Chronicle. The insurer, the fourth largest property and casualty insurance provider in the state in 2021, paused new policies “so we can continue to protect current customers,” spokesperson Brittany Nash wrote in a Thursday email to The Chronicle.
"The cost to insure new home customers in California is far higher than the price they would pay for policies due to wildfires, higher costs for repairing homes, and higher reinsurance premiums," Nash wrote in a follow-up email on Friday. The cost of rebuilding has increased with inflation, but Allstate can't adjust prices quickly due to state regulation, Nash wrote.
