'Occupy' Promises 'Biggest Shut Down The City Of New York Has Ever Seen,' Blockade Of San Fran

As part of Occupy Wall Street’s call for a nationwide “general strike” May 1, elements within the group are looking to shut down bridges and tunnels in both New York and San Francisco.

Occupy Oakland, the most radical of all the local Occupy groups, passed a resolution April 15 that vows to shut down all travel from Marin to San Francisco.

“If any of the unions on the Golden Gate bridge declare a strike or shutdown action on May Day, we will act in solidarity with these striking workers and the international call for a general strike on May Day, by blockading the flow of capital to the Golden Gate Bridge Highway and Transportation District.

The East Coast response to this shutdown call comes from the website Strikeisaverb.net and claims: “But this May 1, we will create the biggest shut down the city of New York has ever seen...We are announcing these blockades now as a fair warning to the rest of the working people of New York and New Jersey who are considering joining the strikes and mobilizations of the day: the city will be shut down, so enjoy the day without the 99%!” warned the site.

While the movement went largely dormant over the winter, it has vowed to come strong in the spring...That comeback is supposed to be May 1, when the group has promised: “Millions of people throughout the world — workers, students, immigrants, professionals, houseworkers — employed and unemployed alike — will take to the streets to unite in a General Strike against a system that does not work for us.”

Dozens arrested as Occupy Wall Street marks anniversary with fresh protests

A protest to mark the six-month anniversary of the Occupy Wall Street movement has resulted in clashes with police, dozens of arrests and complaints of excessive force.

Police appeared determined to send a signal that they will not tolerate any attempt to re-establish an Occupy camp at its birthplace in Zuccotti Park in New York.

But after a winter in which the Occupy movement has lost some momentum, protesters said they had wanted to mount a show of renewed strength.

"This is our spring offensive," Michael Premo, 30, of New York, told Reuters. "People think the Occupy movement has gone away. It's important for people to see we're back."

Individuals who have been involved in Occupy protests for months described the NYPD actions on Saturday as the most violent they had seen.

Tim Pool, a citizen journalist who has been covering Occupy Wall Street protests since September, described Saturday's arrests as the "most violent" he had seen so far. Pool argued that the NYPD's efforts were a "a swift boot stomp" aimed at curtailing any attempts at another occupation.

Jose Martín, an Occupy Wall Street protester, said he believed the NYPD deployed heavy-handed tactics as warning against any possible attempt to re-establish the Occupy Wall Street camp. "They came in really hard," he said. "They're attempting to scare people off."

Occupy campsites were set up for months in cities around the United States and in Europe last year. In nearly all cases, authorities eventually shut them down.

Occupy protesters disrupt West Coast ports

(CNN) -- Protesters chanting, "Whose port? Our port!" protested at West Coast ports on Monday, temporarily shutting down some of the facilities in a protest against what they called corporate greed.

The protesters, affiliated with the nationwide "Occupy" movement, set out in the pre-dawn hours in Oakland, California; Los Angeles and Portland, Oregon, to shut down ports in an effort to "disrupt the economic machine that benefits the wealthiest individuals and corporations," according to organizers.

Protesters were planning a second occupation of the Oakland port Monday afternoon. Protesters in Seattle also were preparing to protest at the port there, according to organizing websites and posts on Twitter.

In addition to the West Coast port blockades, protesters also were planning to demonstrate at the port in Houston, while demonstrators in Salt Lake City and Denver were planning to disrupt operations of Walmart distribution facilities. About 40 to 50 people protested at the Denver facility, CNN affiliate KCNC reported.

The demonstrations were part of a nationwide day of protest called in the aftermath of efforts by cities across the country, including New York, Boston and Oakland, to clear demonstrators from encampments they had set up in public parks and other locations.

Wall Street protests go global; riots in Rome

Galvanized by the Occupy Wall Street movement, the protests began in New Zealand, touched parts of Asia, spread to Europe, and ultimately resumed at their starting point in New York with 2,000 marchers decrying corporate greed and economic inequality.

While most rallies were relatively small and barely held up traffic, the Rome event drew tens of thousands of people and snaked through the city center for kilometers (miles)...Hundreds of hooded, masked demonstrators rampaged in some of the worst violence seen in the Italian capital for years, setting cars ablaze, breaking bank and shop windows and destroying traffic lights and signposts...Police fired volleys of tear gas and used water cannon to try to disperse militant protesters who were hurling rocks, bottles and fireworks, but clashes went on into the evening.

In contrast, small and peaceful rallies got the ball rolling across the Asia-Pacific region on Saturday. In Auckland, New Zealand's biggest city, 3,000 people chanted and banged drums, denouncing corporate greed

In Sydney, about 2,000 people, including representatives of Aboriginal groups, communists and trade unionists, protested outside the central Reserve Bank of Australia.

Hundreds marched in Tokyo, including anti-nuclear protesters. In Manila a few dozen marched on the U.S. Embassy waving banners reading: "Down with U.S. imperialism" and "Philippines not for sale".

Over 100 people gathered at the Taipei stock exchange, chanting "we are Taiwan's 99 percent"

In Hong Kong, home to the Asian headquarters of investment banks such as Goldman Sachs, over 100 people gathered at Exchange Square in the Central district.

Portugal was the scene of the biggest reported protest action with more than 20,000 marching in Lisbon and a similar number in the country's second city Oporto, two days after the government announced a new batch of austerity measures.

In Paris, around 1,000 protesters rallied in front of city hall, coinciding with the G20 finance chiefs' meeting,

The worldwide protests were a response in part to calls by the New York demonstrators for more people to join them. Their example has prompted calls for similar occupations in dozens of cities from Saturday.

In Madrid, around 2,000 people had gathered for a march to the central Puerta del Sol.

Thousands of protesters also gathered in Barcelona and local radio said, and further demonstrations were planned in more than 60 Spanish towns in the evening.

In Germany, where sympathy for southern Europe's debt troubles is not widespread, thousands gathered in Berlin, Hamburg, Leipzig and outside the ECB in Frankfurt.

Demonstrators gathered peacefully in Paradeplatz, the main square in the Swiss financial center of Zurich.

Wall Street protesters vow to resist eviction

Protesters campaigning against corporate greed have vowed to resist moves to oust them today from a park in Manhattan where they have been camping for a month.

The Occupy Wall Street protesters have been told by Mike Bloomberg, the mayor of New York, that Zucotti Park will be "cleaned" at 7am today – midday in the UK – and that they will have to leave, taking all their camping equipment with them.

Demonstrators warned last night that they do not intend to simply give in to efforts to clear them from Zuccotti Park. In a statement they said: "We won't allow Bloomberg and the NYPD to foreclose our occupation. This is an occupation, not a permitted picnic.
