Bill aimed at banning anti-Semitism in public schools gets some hefty pushback

Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis signed a law aimed at banning anti-Semitism in public schools while on a trip to Israel ... Wednesday [5-29-19] ... but that has also received criticism for infringing on free speech ... adding anti-Semitism to the list of outlawed forms of discrimination in Florida, equating it with other forms of racial discrimination, reported the Tallahasse Democrat.

The law gives examples of anti-Semitic statements, including

A number of state and national groups and individuals, some Jewish, heavily criticized the law for infringing on the First Amendment and for defining anti-Semitism too broadly.

According to Floridapolitics.com, the letter’s signatories included constitutional lawyer Alan Levine, who has argued First Amendment cases in front of the U.S. Supreme Court, Rabbi Bryan Mann, and Miami lawyer Benjamin Waxman.

Cohn said... “The new law statutorily labels nearly all criticisms of Israel as anti-Semitism, and will serve as a new tool to suppress student and faculty speech around one of the most hotly debated topics of our time.”

Florida Legislature Passes "Anti-Semitism" Law, FL Gov. DeSantis Plans Signing Ceremony In Israel

Florida Republican Gov. Ron DeSantis has indicated that he will sign a bill aimed at combating anti-Semitism in public education, and it could occur during his planned trip to Israel later in the month.

“We have an anti-Semitism bill, which is one of the strongest in the nation, that I’ll sign into law, actually I think I will sign it into law when we’re in Jerusalem doing a Cabinet meeting,” the governor said, according to the Orlando Weekly. He plans to be in Israel during the week of May 25-31.

HB 741 highlights anti-Semitism, calling upon schools to treat such discrimination “by students or employees or resulting from institutional policies motivated by anti-Semitic intent in an identical manner to discrimination motivated by race.”

House Bill 741 cruised through the Florida House and Senate, receiving unanimous votes of approval from both bodies.

The bill lists defines examples of anti-Semitism, including:

“Calling for, aiding, or justifying violence against Jews.

"Alleging myths about a world Jewish conspiracy or that Jews control the media, economy, government, or other institutions.

"Accusing Jewish people as a whole of being responsible for real or imaginary wrongdoing by a single Jewish person, group, or the state of Israel, or for acts of non-Jews.

"Accusing the Jewish people of inventing or exaggerating the Holocaust.

"Accusing Jewish citizens of countries other than Israel of being more loyal to Israel than their own nations.

"Demonizing, applying a double standard to, or delegitimizing Israel.”

The USF Hillel campus rabbi has a message for state leaders and educators in Florida on how to stop anti-Semitism: “observe the law.”

Twitter Hands Over ID Info on Anti-Jewish Postings

Twitter said Friday it had handed over data to French authorities to help identify the authors of anti-Semitic tweets, following a complaint from a Jewish students' group.

A French court in January ordered the company to provide the data after legal action by France's Union of Jewish Students (UEJF).

Twitter said in a statement that it had given information to judicial authorities "enabling the identification of some authors" of anti-Semitic tweets. It said the move "puts an end to the dispute" with the UEJF and that the two parties had "agreed to continue to work actively together in order to fight racism and anti-Semitism,” adding that the two sides would also cooperate on "measures to improve the accessibility of the procedure for notifications of illicit tweets."

So here's where it stands: Twitter gives up the info, the French government has already vowed to prosecute the authors of the alleged "anti-semitic" tweets [as seen at top], and Twitter agrees to now partner with "France's Union of Jewish Students" (UEJF) to work out a system to effectively police the social media site for "illicit tweets", which as mentioned above [see 'follow up'], is not limited to just so-called "anti-semitic" remarks, but will make comments about race and homosexuality officially subject to Big Brother scrutiny also, as well as possible criminal liability for 'hate speech' - exactly as is being exampled here.

Helen Thomas Blasted For 'Zionists' Comments

Helen Thomas, the former "dean" of the White House Press Corps who lost her position over a string of anti-Semitic comments, has spoken out again, this time claiming Hollywood, the White House, Wall Street and other American institutions are "owned by the Zionists" with an anti-Arab agenda.

Thomas was a correspondent with United Press International for 57 years, an opinion columnist with Hearst Newspapers for 10 years and the senior White House reporter, covering every president since Eisenhower, until damaging comments earlier this year pushed her to retirement.

Robert Cohen, executive director of the Jewish Community Relations Council of Metropolitan Detroit, criticized Thomas' comments.

"When she said … today that Congress, the White House, Hollywood and Wall Street are owned by Zionists, Ms. Thomas repeated the anti-Semitic stereotypes that have been used for more than a century to incite hatred of Jews," Cohen told the Free Press. "Her comments should be condemned by all people who oppose bigotry in any form."

The Anti-Defamation League further called upon journalistic institutions that have honored Thomas in the past to revoke awards given to the former White House correspondent.*

Is this stuff supposed to be believable?
