Judge Orders 'Temporary' Halt Of Rhode Island Shutdown

Rhode Island dodges government shutdown

(CNNMoney.com) -- Rhode Island will be open for business Friday.

State workers were scheduled to take their first of 12 furlough days ordered by Gov. Donald Carcieri. But a state Supreme Court justice temporary [sic] blocked the shutdown Thursday after several employee unions sued, arguing the move violated their contracts.

"Preventing the state from moving forward with the shutdown days cripples our ability to address growing budget gaps," Carcieri said in a statement.

The entire State Government of Rhode Island was to have been temporarily shut down for twelve days beginning today 9-4-09. Instead, a judge 'temporarily' blocks the shutdown. The state responds by claiming that being prevented from taking this action "cripples our ability..." etc.

What's going on? Simple...this is the "time and effort", as mentioned in the 'follow up' quote above.
