Grocery Stores Give Food Discounts to Customers who Agree to Receive Flu Shot Vaccines
...food retail companies with pharmacies such as Randalls, Safeway, Winn Dixie, and the huge retail food chain Kroger have been offering customers incentives and rewards for agreeing to receive flu shots...Last month customers who got a flu shot at Winn-Dixie stores using their reward card saved $5 on the vaccine and also were given free merchandise including apples, juice, facial tissues and disinfecting wipes. Both Safeway and Randall's stores are giving their customers vouchers for 10 percent off their grocery purchases if they get their flu shot in their pharmacies...At least one Walgreens has been reported to be rewarding its employees with iPads if they meet a quota "goal" of pushing vaccines onto customers. In fact, several readers who say they are Walgreens employees have also reported to NaturalNews -- and requested anonymity out of fear of losing their jobs -- that they were being rewarded with incentives if they met a predetermined "goal" of pushing a certain number of customers into getting flu shots. They were also threatened with reprimands if they fail to meet this goal.

Bypassing Congress, Obama Sends U.S. Troops To 4 African Nations By 'Declaration'

Obama sending troops to aid Africa anti-insurgency

WASHINGTON—Intervening in a volatile and brutal crisis, President Barack Obama said Friday he has dispatched 100 U.S. troops to central Africa to support a years-long fight against a guerrilla group accused of horrific atrocities. Obama said they were sent to advise, not engage in combat, unless forced to defend themselves.

In a letter to Congress, Obama said the troops will act as advisers in a long-running battle against the Lord's Resistance Army, considered one of Africa's most ruthless rebel groups, and help to hunt down its notorious leader, Joseph Kony.

The first of the troops arrived in Uganda on Wednesday, the White House said, and others will be sent to South Sudan, the Central African Republic and the Democratic Republic of the Congo.

Obama declared his decision to send troops as in keeping with the national security interests of the United States. The White House announced it in a low-key fashion, releasing the Obama notification and justification of the troop deployment that the president sent to congressional leaders.

Wall Street protests go global; riots in Rome

Galvanized by the Occupy Wall Street movement, the protests began in New Zealand, touched parts of Asia, spread to Europe, and ultimately resumed at their starting point in New York with 2,000 marchers decrying corporate greed and economic inequality.

The federal trial of the so-called underwear bomber came to an abrupt halt on Wednesday when the defendant, Umar Farouk Abdulmutallab, pleaded guilty to charges of trying to blow up an international flight heading for Detroit.

Abdulmutallab was charged with attempting to blow up Northwest Airlines Flight 253 with a bomb in his underwear on Christmas 2009.

The bomb failed to detonate properly, and passengers then seized Abdulmutallab, who was burned in the incident, amid smoke and fire.

Abdulmutallab later told government investigators that he was working for an Al Qaeda group run by Anwar Awlaki, an American Muslim cleric recently killed in Yemen by U.S. and Yemeni forces. Awlaki's alleged role in the airline incident was one of the rationales for the U.S. attack on the cleric, who was never convicted in a U.S. court.

Pennsylvania’s Capital City Files for Bankruptcy

The City Council of Harrisburg, Pennsylvania’s financially troubled capital, filed for bankruptcy on Wednesday, a surprise move that was immediately opposed by the mayor and Gov. Tom Corbett, who argued that the filing was illegal under state law.

The filing — which listed debts in excess of $400 million, largely associated with a failed trash incinerator — pitched the city into political confusion.

Council members like Brad Koplinski, who voted for the filing, acknowledged that it was an extraordinary move, but argued that the petition was legal, and even necessary because the mayor’s state-backed plan for financial overhaul had been rejected by the Council. The Council has been locked in battle with Ms. Thompson for months, voting to reject her plan largely on the ground that it demanded too little from creditors.

The petition states that the city is “in imminent jeopardy through six pending legal actions by creditors” who are associated with the city’s failed trash incinerator project, which has saddled the city with debts that are more than quadruple its annual budget. Meeting those legal demands would “substantially interrupt the city’s ability to provide health or safety services to its citizens,” the petition said. The amount of debt, the petition states, “is vastly beyond the ability of the city to pay.”

The filing comes a week before the State Senate is set to consider a bill, already passed by the House, that would authorize Governor Corbett to assume responsibility for most of the city’s finances, something that some members of the Council had been trying to prevent. Under that possibility, the city would be placed in a kind of financial receivership and the governor would choose a manager to steer the process.

D.C. Protesters: 'Freedom Plaza Is Now Ours, And We're Never Giving It Back'

(CNSNews.com) - When protesters refused to leave Freedom Plaza in downtown Washington on Monday after their permit expired, the U.S. Park Police extended that permit for another four months.

"Freedom Plaza is now ours, and we're never giving it back," said a protest organizer at the October2011 website: "We have not said that when the four months are over and the American Spring is here we will leave."

It's not clear why the U.S. Park Police, which falls under President Obama's Interior Department, offered to extend the permit so anti-corporate, anti-war protesters could occupy Freedom Plaza through mid-February.

And if protest organizers have their way, the crowd in Freedom Plaza will grow in the days ahead:

4 generator failures hit US nuclear plants

Associated Press= ATLANTA (AP) — Four generators that power emergency systems at U.S. nuclear plants have failed when needed since April, an unusual cluster that has attracted the attention of federal inspectors and could prompt the industry to re-examine its maintenance plans.

None of these failures has threatened the public. But the diesel generators serve the crucial function of supplying electricity to cooling systems that prevent a nuclear plant's hot, radioactive fuel from overheating, melting and potentially releasing radiation into the environment. That worst-case scenario happened this year when the Fukushima Dai-ichi nuclear plant in Japan lost all backup power for its cooling systems after an earthquake and tsunami.

At a minimum, the failures have prompted NRC inspectors to increase their scrutiny at plants where the problems happened. More than 2,000 Evangelical, Orthodox Chaplains Join Catholics in Opposing Pentagon Directive on Same-Sex Marriage

(CNSNews.com) – A national group representing more than 2,000 military chaplains from evangelical Christian and Orthodox backgrounds said on Wednesday that the Pentagon has launched a “direct assault” on marriage, and the chaplains they endorse will not be allowed to perform same-sex wedding ceremonies under any circumstances.

Dr. Ron Crews, executive director of the newly formed Chaplain Alliance for Religious Liberty, said his 2,000-plus membership is concerned about a Sept. 30 Pentagon memorandum that authorizes chaplains and military chapel facilities to be used for “any private ceremony,” a move that contradicts current federal law, the Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA).

“By dishonestly sanctioning the use of federal facilities for ‘marriage counterfeits’ that federal law and the vast majority of Americans have rejected, the Pentagon has launched a direct assault on the fundamental unit of society – husband and wife,” Crews said.

Crews further said his Evangelical membership is in accord with the Catholic Archdiocese for Military Service, headed by Archbishop Timothy Broglio, which said on Tuesday that no Catholic chaplain in the military will be allowed to perform same-sex “marriages” and that same-sex weddings would not be allowed in the Catholic chapel on the grounds of the U.S. Military Academy at West Point.

More than 5,000 people crammed into Foley Square in lower Manhattan, where the city's courts and government buildings are located, before marching toward Wall Street. Union officials estimated the number at 8,000 to 12,000 and it was clearly the biggest protest yet for the fledgling movement.

The march was backed by members of the United Federation of Teachers, which represents most of New York's public school teachers, as well as the Workers United and Transport Workers, which represents many of the city's bus drivers.

The Professional Staff Congress-CUNY (PSC-CUNY), which represents more than 20,000 professors and staff at the City University of New York, also gave its support.

The movement has had widening support, with franchises cropping up in towns and major cities across the United States, in Boston, Chicago, Los Angeles and elsewhere.
