First lady asks restaurants to serve healthy foods
WASHINGTON – First lady Michelle Obama is prodding the nation's restaurants to add more healthy options to menus, label those items more prominently and market nutritious foods to kids.

Speaking to the National Restaurant Association on Monday, Mrs. Obama pleaded with restaurants small and large to take a little butter or cream out of their dishes, use low fat milk and provide apple slices or carrots as a default side dish on the kids' menu.

Mrs. Obama said that Americans are spending half their food dollars outside the home and eating a third of meals in restaurants. She asked the restaurants to rethink the food they offer and reformulate their menus to help combat childhood obesity.

"We have to do more, we have to go farther, and we need your help to lead this effort," she told the restaurateurs and executives.

Superbug Found In 3 U.S. States, Global Response Needed

A new “superbug” from India that is resistant to every known antibiotic has sickened people in three states as it continues to spread throughout the globe, health officials said Monday.

The bacteria now poses a worldwide threat, warned experts attending the 50th annual meeting of the Interscience Conference on Antimicrobial Agents and Chemotherapy (ICAAC), the world's largest gathering of infectious disease specialists.

"There is an urgent need, first, to put in place an international surveillance system over the coming months and, second, to test all the patients admitted to any given health system" wherever possible, said Patrice Nordmann of Bicetre Hospital in France.

"For the moment, we don't know how fast this phenomenon is spreading... it could take months or years, but what is certain is that it will spread," Nordmann told the AFP from the ICAAC conference in Boston, where 12,000 specialists were in attendance from September 12-14.

Measures have already been approved in France, and are being negotiated in Japan, Singapore and China, said Nordmann, a microbiology professor at South-Paris Medical School and head of Bicetre's department of bacteriology and virology.

Scientists have long feared an infectious-disease nightmare such as this — a highly adaptable gene that incorporates itself into many types of common germs and confers widespread drug resistance.

"It's just a matter of time" until the gene is transmitted more broadly person-to-person, he told The Associated Press (AP).

Sweden may be a member of the European Union, but to date it has opted not to join the EU’s currency union. If some people in Sweden have their way it may never be necessary to join the currency union, since they would rather see all coins and bank notes replaced with debit and credit cards. The subject has been simmering for some time, but was brought to the forefront July 17 through a British Broadcasting Corporation report. In this report it is noted there are high profile proponents of a cashless but plastic and electronic transaction driven society that include former Abba band member Bjorn Eulvaeus, several labor unions, and the Swedish Work Environment Authority.

New Welfare Foundation spokesman Par Strom, based in Stockholm, was quick to disagree. Strom said, “If it’s impossible to pay cash when you buy stuff, it’s also impossible not to leave electronic footprints behind you, and the electronic footprints from what you buy put together can tell the entire story about your life. World Panel Backs Rules to Avert Banking Crises

BASEL, Switzerland —Top central bankers and bank regulators agreed Sunday on far-reaching new rules for the global banking industry...

Financial authorities from 27 countries reached agreement on rules that require banks to raise the amount of common equity they hold to 7 percent of assets from 2 percent, part of a series of measures intended to help avert crises of the kind that nearly plunged the world into depression in late 2008.

The recommendations by the group, which includes Ben S. Bernanke, chairman of the Federal Reserve, are subject to ratification by the G-20 nations later this year and then enactment by individual nations before they become binding.

The group set a deadline of Jan. 1, 2013, for member nations to put the rules, known as Basel III, into place.

Website pulled on US church that wants to burn Korans

GAINESVILLE, Florida — The small Florida church that has sparked global outrage with its plan to hold a Koran-burning event had its website pulled from the Internet on Thursday by its host.
Dan Goodgame, a spokesman for the San Antonio, Texas-based web hosting firm Rackspace, told AFP the evangelical Dove World Outreach Center church had, "violated the Offensive Content section of its Acceptable Use policy."

Healthcare workers to be fired if they refuse flu shots, medical group demands (opinion)

That's no exaggeration, either. A position paper just released by the Society for Healthcare Epidemiology of America (SHEA) calls for mandatory flu vaccine for all healthcare personnel. And if you work in the healthcare field and refuse? SHEA, which is organization of epidemiologists and infectious disease physicians, says you should be fired from your job or, if you are applying for one, denied employment.

The paper, published in this month's Infection Control and Healthcare Epidemiology journal and endorsed by the Infectious Diseases Society of America (IDSA), specifically demands that influenza vaccination of healthcare personnel should be a condition of both initial and continued employment in healthcare facilities. In fact, according the SHEA paper, it doesn't matter whether a healthcare professional has direct patient contact -- or even whether he or she is directly employed by a healthcare facility -- they should be forced to have a flu shot to have a job.

PATCO riders undergo search

LINDENWOLD — A swarm of DRPA police officers, uniformed screeners from the federal Transportation Security Administration and an explosives-sniffing K-9 greeted commuters at the Lindenwold PATCO station Tuesday morning, the first of what will be routine random searches of riders, their bags and vehicles.

"It was chaotic," said the accountant from Magnolia. "Nobody was sure what was happening, whether it was safe to get on the train, or whether we were carrying something we shouldn't be.

Though Tuesday's drill was designed as a training session for a special DRPA police unit -- known as Visible Intermodal Prevention and Response -- there are more commuter searches to come. The unit plans to conduct searches several times monthly -- without advance notice -- at various PATCO stations.

TSA set up two long tables inside the gates of the Lindenwold station. Signs were posted at both entrances saying: "All persons beyond this point are subject to search of the person, packages and vehicles."

One of the major players in shutting down questionable advertising on Craigslist thinks authorities need to focus on more than just that one website to combat sex trafficking in the U.S.

Under pressure from the general public and 18 attorneys general, Craigslist has closed down its adult services section, which was often used to advertise prostitutes and sex-trafficking victims. The section has been taken down and covered with the word "censored" for locations in the United States.

"This will be a victory only if those attorneys general that pressed Craigslist continue to press other companies that are involved in sexual trafficking and hardcore pornography on their website," Trueman contends.

He concludes there now needs to be a full-court press on all similar sites.

Pediatricians will join call for mandatory flu shots

The American Academy of Pediatrics plans to call for all health workers to get flu vaccinations, saying unvaccinated doctors, nurses and other medical staffers pose a threat to patients.

The academy, which represents 60,000 pediatricians, is the latest of several organizations that now back mandatory flu shots for health workers. The groups include the National Patient Safety Foundation, the Infectious Diseases Society of America and the Society of Healthcare Epidemiologists.

The new push to make flu shots compulsory for health workers was prompted by low vaccination rates during last year's swine flu pandemic, Poland says. It probably will bring to a head a debate that has festered for more than a decade, he says.

Nancy Hughes of the American Nurses Association says her organization also believes all registered nurses should get flu shots. But the nursing organization has steadfastly opposed mandatory vaccine, a policy to be reviewed today by its board of directors. "There may be a change of policy, there may not be," Hughes says. "We're very concerned about seasonal influenza. We don't want to see a nurse infected either."

The magnitude 7.1 earthquake that struck the South Island of New Zealand on Saturday occurred on a previously unknown fault.

According to geophysics researcher Euan Smith at the Victoria University of Wellington, it happened on a previously unknown fault.

"The Earth science community knows that not all active faults in New Zealand have been identified. So the existence of this fault is an example of one of Donald Rumsfeld's 'known unknowns'," he told the New Zealand Science Media Centre.

Genetically modified salmon, which grows at a superfast rate, is safe to be farmed and eaten, American scientists have declared.

The move by experts advising U.S. watchdogs will clear the way for the first GM creature to be sold as food.

The first GM salmon could be on American dinner tables within two to three years, and possibly on British plates soon after that, paving the way for the genetic modification of other fish and food animals into what critics are calling 'Frankenfood'.

The firm behind the GM Atlantic Salmon, Aqua Bounty, says its fish are normal but for the fact they grow up to three times more quickly.

Christchurch Devastated By 7.4 Earthquake

Christchurch has been left devastated after a massive 7.4 magnitude earthquake struck 30km west of the city at 4.35am this morning [9-4-10 NZ].

The quake was at a depth of 33km and was centred near Darfield, and has left large parts of the area without power, water or telephones.

Roads have been blocked by debris after the several buildings collapsed onto the streets, leaving their interiors visible and the central city resembling a war zone.

What now for Gulf? Fire complicates drill debate

News of another oil rig fire in the Gulf of Mexico, so soon after the BP oil spill, has set off a wave of anxiety along the Gulf Coast and prompted calls for the government to extend its six-month ban on deepwater drilling.

Just when it seemed the Obama administration might be ready to lift the unpopular ban, the fire raises new questions about the dangers of offshore drilling, leaving the industry wondering when it can get back to work.

"Anything that casts any kind of shadow on the industry right now certainly complicates lifting the moratorium," said Bruce Bullock, director of the Maguire Energy Institute at Southern Methodist University in Texas. "It makes it difficult to continue to say that (the BP spill) is an aberration."

"There's over 100 fires in the Gulf in a given year. Were it not for the BP incident this would receive very little coverage," Bullock said. "This could have happened in a meat factory or a paint factory or anywhere else."

Even so, environmental groups and some Democratic lawmakers rushed to denounce offshore drilling and urged the Obama administration to extend the six-month deepwater ban to shallow water as well. The current ban has shut down drilling at 33 ocean wells, but there still are more than 7,300 active leases in the Gulf of Mexico, 58 percent of them in deep waters, according to the American Petroleum Institute.

The Interior Department has said it is considering lifting the ban for certain categories of rigs before the scheduled Nov. 30 expiration. But after Thursday's accident the department may hesitate to act.

A day before the fire, the American Petroleum Institute held a "Rally for Jobs" in Houston to protest the drilling moratorium. Mariner official Barbara Dianne Hagood was among those in attendance, according to a Financial Times report.

"I have been in the oil and gas industry for 40 years, and this administration is trying to break us," she told the London-based paper. "The moratorium they imposed is going to be a financial disaster for the Gulf Coast, Gulf Coast employees and Gulf Coast residents."

Mexico To Illegalize Large Cash Transactions - 'Digital Money' Only Please

Mexico to ban payment in cash

Mexico says it is planning to tighten the noose around big-ticket cash purchases to curtail the flow of smuggled dollars and fight money laundering.

President Felipe Calderon put forward the sweeping new measures Thursday to crack down on billions of dollars of the illicit money gained by the drug cartels and spent by them for more profit.

"This illicit money is vital for the criminal. That is what they seek, this money. It is also vital to finance their activities," said Calderon, The Washington Post reported on Thursday.

If approved by the legislature, the legislation would not allow anyone to buy real estate in cash. Neither would it permit anyone to spend more than MXN 100,000 (USD 7,700) in cash on vehicles, boats, airplanes and luxury goods.

Violators of the new legislation would face up to 15 years in prison.

HYDERABAD, PAKISTAN -- Pakistan ordered nearly half-a-million people to evacuate towns on Thursday as rising floods threaten further havoc in a country straining to cope with its worst humanitarian disaster.

The catastrophe has already affected more than 17 million people and left 8 million dependent on aid to survive.

In the southern province of Sindh, where the floods have washed away huge swathes of the rich farmland on which Pakistan’s struggling economy depends, a senior administration official warned that fresh floods threaten three towns. “We have warned people of Sujawal, Mirpur Bathoro and Daro towns to leave for safer places in view of possible flooding there,” Hadi Bakhsh Kalhoro, the senior official in Thatta district, told AFP.“Sujawal, Mirpur Bathoro and Daro towns have an approximate population of 400,000,” he said.

Thatta district administrator Manzoor Sheikh told AFP that some 100,000 people were on the move for safety Thursday. “My estimate is there were 100,000 people moving just today toward safer places, and the movement of people was still continuing,” Sheikh said.

Flood Devastated Pakistan Warned Is "Ripe For Coup"

The government in Islamabad is floundering and ripe for a coup – if anyone wanted to launch one, says Con Coughlin.

If ever a country were ripe for a coup, it is Pakistan.

Now, following the widespread devastation unleashed by the floods, the President finds himself the subject of bitter criticism at home as well. It began with his ill-considered decision to continue with his tour of France and Britain earlier this month as the crisis deepened, when he visited his elegant chateau and made arrangements to launch the political career of his 21-year-old son, Bilawal Zardari Bhutto. Now his opponents are directing their ire at the government's inept response to the wider crisis caused by the floods.

In a country where most of the agricultural wealth is concentrated in the hands of a few feudal landlords, the misery being experienced by millions of dispossessed and impoverished citizens is inevitably going to stoke the fires of dissent. Atlaf Hussain, the exiled leader of the Muttahuda Quami Movement, articulated the suspicions of many Pakistanis when he accused some landlords of deliberately diverting the waters to neighbouring villages in order to protect their own crops and livestock. He is now demanding a French Revolution-style redistribution of land among the masses, and has issued a call to "patriotic generals" to fulfil their duty by establishing martial law.

...the government's handling of the crisis has revived perceptions that the country's political elite is interested only in taking care of its own interests, rather than those of the people its members have been elected to serve.

Extreme measures will be required to rebuild large swathes of the country once the waters have receded – but building the effective and inclusive government that Pakistan deserves will be an even greater challenge.

The human toll in Pakistan is unimaginable. Apart from this, it is also very interesting to observe that 'suddenly'...a situation has arisen whereby "extreme measures" will be necessary to "rebuild" much of Pakistan, while at the same time creating the perception that a "regime change" may also be necessary.
