NZ Quake Anomaly-Update: 'Fault' Is Unknown; Earth Ripped Apart 11 Feet

The magnitude 7.1 earthquake that struck the South Island of New Zealand on Saturday occurred on a previously unknown fault.

According to geophysics researcher Euan Smith at the Victoria University of Wellington, it happened on a previously unknown fault.

"The Earth science community knows that not all active faults in New Zealand have been identified. So the existence of this fault is an example of one of Donald Rumsfeld's 'known unknowns'," he told the New Zealand Science Media Centre.

But it's unclear why the crustal stress was released on this particular fault, rather than an active fault less than 40 km away called Porter's Pass, he adds. [*40 km=25 miles] *** According to an article from msnbc the earth was ripped open up to 11 feet:

"One side of the earth has lurched to the right ... up to 11 feet (3.5 meters) and in some places been thrust up," Quigley told National Radio.

Roger Bates, whose dairy farm at Darfield was close to the quake's epicenter, said the new fault line had ripped up the surface across his land.

"The whole dairy farm is like the sea now, with real (soil) waves right across the dairy farm. We don't have physical holes (but) where the fault goes through it's been raised a meter or meter and a half (3 to 5 feet)," he told National Radio.

Must have been tremendously powerful. Not being a scientist, and definitely not a geologist, but just observing the effects of this very damaging quake, it seems as if it must have hit with the force of an atomic bomb.

Very strange also, the anomaly of the quake having hit where there was no existing fault, bypassing an existing and relatively nearby active fault.
