Facing bankruptcy, US Postal Service plans unprecedented cuts to first-class mail next spring

WASHINGTON — Already mocked by some as “snail mail,” first-class U.S. mail will slow even more by next spring under plans by the cash-strapped U.S. Postal Service to eliminate more than 250 processing centers. Nearly 30,000 workers would be laid off, too, as the post office struggles to respond to a shift to online communication and bill payments.

The cuts are part of $3 billion in reductions aimed at helping the agency avert bankruptcy next year. They would virtually eliminate the chance for stamped letters to arrive the next day, a change in first-class delivery standards that have been in place since 1971.

“The post office is a mainstay of America, and the fact that these services will no longer be available is absolutely crazy,” said Carol Braxton of Naperville, Ill., as she waited in line at a mail sorting center Monday with the holiday shipping season picking up steam.

Verizon moves to align cable, wireless worlds

In a deal that could remake the boundaries of the cable and wireless industries, Verizon Wireless said Friday that it had agreed to acquire wireless spectrum from three cable companies at a cost of $3.6 billion.

The spectrum transfer, if approved by the government, will allow Verizon to further expand its wireless data networks. But perhaps just as important, a separate agreement announced Friday will enable the cable companies – Comcast, Time Warner Cable and Bright House Networks – to market Verizon services and vice versa, foreshadowing the possibility of cable television, broadband, home phone and cellphone service someday appearing on a single monthly bill.

The sale of the spectrum licenses, which give the rights to airwaves, is part of a "complete reordering of the competitive universe as we know it today," cable analyst Craig Moffett of Sanford Bernstein & Co. wrote in a report.

Instead of creating their own wireless services, Comcast, Time Warner Cable and Bright House will market Verizon's service. In turn Verizon will market the cable companies in their respective local markets.

"We'll be joined at the hip going after new customers," a Comcast executive said Friday in describing the deal.

White House repeats threat to veto US defense bill

WASHINGTON — The White House on Friday reaffirmed its threat to veto the Pentagon budget after the Senate passed a funding bill that requires military detention for terrorism suspects and indefinite detention without trial in some cases.

The provisions were in a $660 billion 2012 defense bill that passed the Senate on Thursday in a 93-7 vote.

It would require that terrorism suspects be held by the military, and either be tried by US military commissions or in some cases be held indefinitely.

The House and Senate versions will have to be reconciled in conference, before a single version can go to the president's desk for his signature.

Senate Votes To Let Military Detain Americans Indefinitely, White House Threatens Veto

WASHINGTON -- The Senate voted Tuesday to keep a controversial provision to let the military detain terrorism suspects on U.S. soil and hold them indefinitely without trial -- prompting White House officials to reissue a veto threat.

The measure, part of the massive National Defense Authorization Act, was also opposed by civil libertarians on the left and right. But 16 Democrats and an independent joined with Republicans to defeat an amendment by Sen. Mark Udall (D-Colo.) that would have killed the provision, voting it down with 61 against, and 37 for it.

Backers of military detention of Americans -- a measure crafted by Sen. Carl Levin (D-Mich.) -- came out swinging against Udall's amendment on the Senate floor earlier Tuesday.

"The enemy is all over the world. Here at home. And when people take up arms against the United States and [are] captured within the United States, why should we not be able to use our military and intelligence community to question that person as to what they know about enemy activity?" Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-S.C.) said.

"They should not be read their Miranda Rights. They should not be given a lawyer," Graham said. "They should be held humanely in military custody and interrogated about why they joined al Qaeda and what they were going to do to all of us."

A White House official said the administration stands by the veto threat. "We take this very, very seriously," the official said.

Global Central Banks Join Forces
The Dow Jones Industrial Average soared 490 points

The Federal Reserve, European Central Bank and four other central banks unveiled a coordinated action to provide liquidity to "ease strains in financial markets."

"The purpose of these actions is to ease strains in financial markets and thereby mitigate the effects of such strains on the supply of credit to households and businesses and so help foster economic activity," the Fed said in a statement.

Essentially, the Fed reducing the cost of providing dollar funding to the other banks in exchange for their respective currencies to "improve liquidity conditions in global money markets," according to the Fed's website. The swaps are temporary, generally ranging from overnight to three months, and there is a binding agreement to reverse the transaction at a later point, according to the website.

The other banks involved were The Bank of Canada, the Bank of England, the Bank of Japan, and the Swiss National Bank.

"The coordinated action by the global Central banks is welcome news," Fred Dickson, chief investment strategist at Davidson Companies, wrote in an e-mail. "However, we do not see this as the terminal big bang event that marks the end of the current eurozone financial crisis.

VATICAN CITY (CNS) -- Pope Benedict XVI urged international leaders to reach a credible agreement on climate change, keeping in mind the needs of the poor and of future generations.

The pope made the remarks at his noon blessing at the Vatican Nov. 27, the day before officials from 194 countries were to begin meeting in Durban, South Africa, to discuss the next steps in reducing greenhouse gases and stopping global temperatures from rising.

The meeting, which runs until Dec. 9, is the latest in a series to consider follow-up action to the 1997 Kyoto Protocol, which obligated industrialized countries to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by a specific amount. The Kyoto Protocol expires at the end of 2012, and the Durban encounter is considered crucial in forging an additional commitment period.

"Urgent action is necessary. Climate negotiators in Durban must not further delay agreeing to international legislation to curb the threat of climate change and set the world on a path to a more just and sustainable future," he said.

"In fact, it is by now evident that there is no good future for humanity or for the earth unless we educate everyone toward a style of life that is more responsible toward the created world," he said.

Egyptians flock to historic poll

Egyptians flocked to the polls for a first post-revolution election, making a mostly orderly and joyous start to their transition to democracy after a week of violence and political crisis.

Voting for the lower house of parliament takes place in three stages beginning on Monday in the main cities of Cairo, Alexandria and other areas, with the moderate Islamist group the Muslim Brotherhood expected to triumph.

The highly complex procedure to elect a full assembly will end in March.

Much remains unclear about how the new parliament will function and whether it will be able to resolve a standoff with the armed forces over how much power they will retain under a new constitution to be written next year.

After two days of voting in the first stage of the elections for the lower parliament, other cities and regions will follow on December 14 and January 3.

After these, another round of voting will take place from January 29 for the upper house of parliament, and presidential elections are to be held by no later than the end of June next year.

McCain, Levin Want "Worldwide Indefinite Detention Without Charge Or Trial"

The Senate is going to vote on whether Congress will give this president—and every future president — the power to order the military to pick up and imprison without charge or trial civilians anywhere in the world.

The worldwide indefinite detention without charge or trial provision is in S. 1867, the National Defense Authorization Act bill, which will be on the Senate floor on Monday. The bill was drafted in secret by Sens. Carl Levin (D-Mich.) and John McCain (R-Ariz.) and passed in a closed-door committee meeting, without even a single hearing.

The White House has even threatened a veto. But Senate politics has propelled this bad legislation to the Senate floor.

Sen. Mark Udall (D-Colo.) is offering the Udall Amendment that will delete the harmful provisions and replace them with a requirement for an orderly Congressional review of detention power.

In support of this harmful bill, Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-S.C.) explained that the bill will “basically say in law for the first time that the homeland is part of the battlefield” and people can be imprisoned without charge or trial “American citizen or not.” Another supporter, Sen. Kelly Ayotte (R-N.H.) also declared that the bill is needed because “America is part of the battlefield.”

Judge dismisses Harrisburg, PA, bankruptcy protection attempt

HARRISBURG, Pa., Nov 23 (Reuters) - A federal judge said on Wednesday that Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, cannot file for bankruptcy to get out of its $300 million outstanding debt, paving the way for a state takeover of city finances.

The city in October became one of the most-high-profile cities to opt for the little used Chapter 9 of the U.S. bankruptcy code as it tried to get out of a debt burden incurred as a result of an expensive overhaul of the city's incinerator.

"Now we can focus the city on financial recovery. We want to bring the elements of government together," said Robert Philbin, spokesman for Mayor Linda Thompson, who was opposed to the filing.

Pennsylvania Governor Tom Corbett signed a bill on Oct. 20 that allows for a takeover of the city's finances, and he named David Unkovic, a lawyer with ties to the city's biggest creditors, as receiver last week.

A spokesperson for Corbett said the governor was "not surprised" by the ruling and is "moving forward with the receiver process to ensure Harrisburg is put back on sound fiscal footing as soon as possible."

This ruling effectively dissolves the city as it gives control over it to the state - which has actually already assigned a "receiver". The governor signed a bill on 11-20-11 appointing a private party to the position. This puts full control of the city into private hands. Note that the Mayor's spokesman says that they want to "bring the elements of government together". Although few will understand the significance of that Agenda 21- doublespeak, it very clearly signals the intent to transition everything into the globalized model of 'public-private partnerships'...with the emphasis on 'private'. It is through this system that the kabalist-globalists, the 'private partners', intend to micromanage the entire earth. Note also that the "receiver process" is to be moved forward "as soon as possible". Get it done before anybody figures out what just happened.

Bankrupt megachurch Crystal Cathedral in Garden Grove, Calif. is changing faith traditions. The Roman Catholic Dioceses of Orange is purchasing the church’s 40-acre property with its towering glass building for $57.5 million in a deal approved by a bankruptcy court judge Thursday.

The founder’s son, Robert A. Schuller, took over the church until he was forced out, in part, by family members who reportedly disagreed with Schuller’s leadership. The younger Schuller, now chairman of FamilyNet media company, had the highest salary at the church when it went bankrupt at $196,478, the Orange County Register reported.

The current congregants of Crystal Cathedral will have to find a new place of worship though dozens attended the six-hour hearing pleading to call off a sale of the property.

In 2008, the recession led to a decrease in church donations and ticket sales to its holiday pageants, according to church officials.

Survivors of the Tucson, Ariz., shooting rampage that left six dead and 13 wounded, including Rep. Gabrielle Giffords, raised their voices to Congress today calling for stricter gun laws, while also offering words of encouragement to the recovering congresswoman.

Patricia Maisch, who wrestled the gun clip from Jared Lougher and prevented him from reloading his gun, testified before the Senate Judiciary Committee in support of the Fix Gun Checks Act, which would require background checks on anyone who tries to buy a gun, while also tightening rules mandating federal agencies and states to report criminal background activity...In addition to the Tucson survivors, more than 50 victims of gun violence from around the country were also present in the Senate Judiciary hearing today, after a day of lobbying their Congressional representatives.

At 5 pm, tens of thousands of people will gather at Foley Square (just across from City Hall) in solidarity with laborers demanding jobs to rebuild this country’s infrastructure and economy. A gospel choir and a marching band will also be performing. Afterwards we will march to our bridges.

11-17-11 is the two month 'anniversary' of Occupy. 400 events scheduled nationwide, and many more globally according to organizers. Note one thing very interesting. Looking at the poster, it seems that a general theme has been settled on - previously lacking - on which the movement is to be focused. Note specifically the phrase "resist austerity". Austerity, the new word that no one had ever heard of a year or so ago, when the government pretends to be broke and cannot provide services any longer, just so happens to be exactly what the so-called super-committee* is about to do to America beginning next week. As most are aware, 11-23-11 the initial plan is due, the final plan 12-23-11. Perfect timing for agitating Occupy and escalating the chaos, exactly what the NWO-ers want.

Note the other two phrases of the new slogan - reclaim, recreate. The chaos breaks it down, then it can be 'recreated' exactly as the Zionist NWO-ers have planned. Privatized aka 'communitarian'. The intent is to deceive the people into thinking that the new communitarian system is a great thing, and that they have 'reclaimed' autonomy and themselves recreated a better way. They will be greatly disappointed. Communitarianism is totalitarianism. At full development, it will prove to be the 666 kingdom of antichrist. Believe it or not.
