Rupert Murdoch has been known to refer to those running the web as “plagiarists” and “parasites,” threatening to remove all of his content from search engines like Google (especially if Bing is willing to pay up). Many wondered if he was bluffing, but now the process seems to have begun, with the Times Online blocking aggregation of its stories.

As a consequence of this action — apparently the first change to the Times Online’s blocking policy since May 2008 — two million visitors to NewsNow.co.uk every month will no longer find headlines and links to content on the Times Online site in their news search results.

Whether this will be the first domino in a line of things to come remains to be seen — Google News is, of course, far more noteworthy than a “homegrown” UK aggregator — but it is certainly a move in the direction previously threatened by Murdoch and his companies. But if it does happen, expect a far larger outcry when Murdoch and crew start blocking sites that steer the internet conversation.

It's round one in the 2010 fight against global warming and Minnesota has landed the first punch against coal-fired electricity that crosses its borders. The state is seeking to place a tariff on carbon dioxide turned out by coal plants in North Dakota.

Minnesota is hoping to pressure its neighbor to the west to drop coal and embrace renewable energy sources. North Dakota has ample wind energy potential and has even been called the "Saudi Arabia of Wind."

Minnesota's proposed law is not exactly a tax on carbon, but the effects are essentially the same and North Dakota officials are none too happy with the prospect. Coal energy is one of the largest industry bases in the state.

Minnesota is set to handle legal tussles and has allocated $500,000 to fund any forthcoming court proceedings. North Dakota is now in the process of suing Minnesota over the tariff, arguing that the fee would "discourage coal-powered electricity sales in favor of renewably powered electricity."

While this is exactly what Minnesota is attempting to do, North Dakota might have a good case against the so-called tariff, which would end up being paid for by Minnesota utility payers.

According to Article 1, Section 10 of the United States Constitution, "No State shall, without the consent of the Congress, lay any Imposts or Duties on Imports or Exports, except what may be absolutely necessary for executing its inspection laws ..." If such an argument holds up, the carbon tariff could be deemed unconstitutional if not accepted by Congress.

Catholic Portugal Moves to Allow Gay Marriage

Portugal's parliament approved a measure Friday to legalize gay marriage, paving the way for the conservative Catholic nation to become the sixth in Europe to allow homosexuals to get married. The bill now goes back to a committee for review before a final vote. Then if the president signs it – as he's expected to do – Portugal's first gay wedding could take place around April.

Ironically, that's just weeks ahead of a planned visit from Pope Benedict XVI.

Gay rights campaigners applauded Friday from parliament's galleries and champagne corks sailed into the air outside. They sliced into a huge tiered wedding cake on parliament's steps, festooned with two bride dolls and two grooms. Dozens of rainbow flags fluttered in the chilly Atlantic breeze.

The Vatican has largely stayed out of the gay marriage debate in Portugal, with Lisbon's Cardinal Patriarch Jose Policarpo saying the issue is "parliament's responsibility."

Same-sex marriage is allowed in Belgium, the Netherlands, Spain, Sweden, Norway, Canada and South Africa, as well as in five U.S. states and the District of Columbia.

Obama non-eligibility attorney asks court for 'evidentiary hearing for possible criminal prosecution'

"There is such a high probability of criminal acts of identity theft and Social Security fraud committed by the respondent that the undersigned requests this honorable court to use its inherent powers to order Sua Sponte an evidentiary hearing on this particular issue for possible criminal prosecution," she wrote in her latest arguments that also request the case be moved to Washington, D.C.

Taitz told WND a hearing is scheduled Jan. 25, and the outcome is up to Judge David Carter. The judge earlier dismissed the case in a ruling that noted the appropriate venue would be the District of Columbia, where Obama's political office is based.

Taitz told WND she's submitted to the court testimony from private investigators and others regarding allegations Obama has used multiple Social Security numbers.

Her request, then, is to have the court move the case "directly to the Chief Judge of the U.S. District of Columbia Royce Lamberth who currently has under submission a related case."

Report: Congressman challenges Obama eligibility

Representative Deal has sent a letter to Putative President Barack Hussein Obama requesting him to prove his eligibility for the office of President of the United States of America. California gay marriage opponent fears for his life

SAN FRANCISCO - An outspoken gay marriage opponent serving as an official litigant defending the state's ban on same-sex weddings on Friday asked a judge to remove him from the lawsuit because he feared the trial would generate publicity that could endanger him and his family.

Hak-Shing William Tam was one of five people who formally intervened to defend the state from a federal lawsuit filed against California. Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger and Attorney General Jerry Brown have declined to mount a defense on behalf of the state.

On Friday, Tam told the court that he was harassed and his property vandalized during the campaign, and feared similar retribution if he continued to represent gay marriage foes' interest in the lawsuit and trial, which is scheduled to start Monday in San Francisco.

"In the past I have received threats on my life, had my property vandalized and am recognized on the streets due to my association with Proposition 8," Tam said in a court filing. "Now that the subject lawsuit is going to trial, I fear I will get more publicity, be more recognizable and that the risk of harm to me and my family will increase."

Tam on Friday didn't mention the judge's decision this week to allow cameras to video record the trial as a factor in his request. Lawyers for Proposition 8 interests asked an appeals court on Friday to halt the planned recording, saying they fear witnesses may restrain or alter their testimony if cameras are present in the courtroom.

A three-judge panel of the 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals denied the request late in the day.

High-Stakes Same-Sex Marriage Trial to Begin in California

San Francisco (AP) - The national debate over same-sex marriage will take center stage in a California courtroom next week at a closely watched federal trial that could ultimately become the landmark case that determines whether gay Americans have a right to marry. The case will decide a challenge to California's gay marriage ban that was approved by voters in 2008, and the ruling will likely be appealed to the U.S. Supreme Court. How the high court rules in the case could set the precedent for whether gay marriage becomes legal nationwide.

The case marks the first federal trial to examine if the U.S. Constitution permits bans on gay marriages, and the challenge is being bankrolled by a group of liberal Hollywood activists including director Rob Reiner and producer Bruce Cohen. They retained two of the nation's most influential lawyers to argue the case - former U.S. Solicitor General Theodore Olson and trial lawyer David Boies.

Republican Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger and Democratic Attorney General Jerry Brown are defendants in the lawsuit by virtue of their prominent positions in California government, but both men opposed the ban and have refused to defend the suit in court. Schwarzenegger has taken no position on the case, while Brown filed a brief saying he agreed with the Olson-Boies team that gays have the same federal constitutional right to marry as heterosexuals.

Presiding over the case is U.S. District Court Chief Judge Vaughn Walker, a Republican named to the bench in 1989 by the first President Bush. Walker, who has a reputation as an independent thinker, was randomly assigned the lawsuit, put it on a fast-track to trial and has said he thinks it raises serious civil rights claims. Vancouver International Airport to Get Full-body Scanners

Travellers at Vancouver International Airport could find themselves subject to full-body scans that see through clothing as early as next week.

The airport is expected to receive one or two of the controversial full-body imaging scanners in the next 10 days, said Don Ehrenholz, vice-president of operations and engineering at YVR.

About a dozen of the new scanners are expected to arrive within the next week and the rest by the spring. Patrick Charette, a Transport Canada spokesman, said the scanners will be used in Halifax, Montreal, Ottawa, Toronto, Winnipeg, Regina, Calgary, Edmonton and Vancouver.

The Vancouver Sun reported Monday that the Vancouver Airport Authority will beef up security plans throughout January, leading up to the 2010 Winter Olympics.

March 1, the day after the closing ceremonies, is expected to be YVR's busiest day in history, with 39,000 people and 77,000 pieces of luggage leaving the airport.

This must be done "as soon as possible" say the Foreign Ministers who released this statement, and with that are fast tracking everything to be ready by June 2010 for a summit meeting of the new Union to be held in Barcelona.

PositiveID (PSID) is to begin a study of its *Health Link implantable microchip in diabetic, hypertensive and obese patients.

The study –like everything else associated with the company formerly known as VeriChip — is bound to be controversial.

The Health Link chip is implanted under a patient’s skin. It can be scanned to access the patient’s online medical records. The company’s critics fear the chip will one day become mandatory, leading to a complete loss of medical privacy, or that Americans will be unable to receive healthcare unless they get chipped.

President Obama recently named Amanda Simpson to be a Senior Technical Advisor to the Commerce Department.

Montana Supreme Court OK's Physician-Assisted Suicide

Montana Becomes 3rd State to OK Doctor-Assisted Suicide

Montana became the third state to allow physician-assisted suicide after its Supreme Court determined Thursday that nothing in the state law prevents patients from seeking it.

While the high court didn't go as far as extending constitutional protections to the procedure as District Judge Dorothy McCarter of Helena did the year before, it did give doctors in the state the freedom to prescribe the necessary drugs to mentally competent, terminally ill patients without fear of being prosecuted.

"In physician aid in dying, the patient, not the physician, commits the final death-causing act by self-administering a lethal dose of medicine," Justice William Leaphart wrote for the court.

Prior to the ruling, only Oregon and Washington state allowed assisted suicides for terminally ill patients, with Oregon adopting the nation's first "death with dignity" law in 1997.

Assisted suicide opponents have promised to take the fight in Montana to the Legislature.

Arizona could be weeks away from going broke

A massive education payment is expected to drain state resources down to zero.

What happens next will affect anyone who works for or with state government.

Arizona legislators have not been able to resolve the budget crisis, and our state could be weeks away from running out of money.

That means having to issue IOU's to everyone.

And it's not only state workers, but also those who provide services, such as child care centers.

For instance, about 70% of the children at Outer Limits School in Tucson get a state subsidy. Owner Bill Berk said the crisis could be devastating to his industry. "We can't give our employees IOU's for their paychecks. We can't give the electric company an IOU," Berk said.

Representative Williams hopes to be able to work something out with banks so they'll accept the IOU's, but he knows that can't last forever.

He says this is going to take legislators forgetting their differences, and working together to begin a very long process to fix Arizona's budget.

Williams said dramatic and difficult decisions are coming for legislators, voters and taxpayers.

Executive Order For US Government To Begin Preparing For Biological Attack

The US Post Office could play a key role in distributing medical aid in the event of a biological attack, according to an executive order released by the White House.

The order signed by President Barack Obama [12-30-09] directs government agencies, local law enforcement and the US Post Office to work on a model for distribution of medical countermeasures in the wake of a biological attack.

“This policy would seek to:

(1) mitigate illness and prevent death;

(2) sustain critical infrastructure; and

(3) complement and supplement State, local, territorial, and tribal government medical countermeasure distribution capacity,” the order said.

“The US Postal Service has the capacity for rapid residential delivery of medical countermeasures for self administration across all communities in the United States,” the order added.

The US Health and Human Services Secretary Kathleen Sebelius and Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano were instructed to work with the post office to develop a “dispensing model for US cities to respond to a large-scale biological attack, with anthrax as the primary threat consideration."

Napolitano announces international airport security campaign

The Department of Homeland Security on Thursday announced it would launch a campaign next week to strengthen security screening procedures at a host of international airports.
