Trump Administration Plans Notable [Big Brother] Changes to Visa Vetting
On December 10, 2025, the Trump Administration announced a new plan to heighten the screening requirements for temporary visitors from visa-waiver countries as part of the Electronic System for Travel Authorization (ESTA). Under the proposal, the US Customs and Border Protection (CBP) would for the first time require visitors from close partner countries that participate in ESTA to provide social media data and other personally identifying information to the government.
CBP explained that the requirement to scrutinize social media information was necessary to comply with Executive Order 14161, “Protecting the United States form Foreign Terrorists and Other National Security and Public Safety Threats.”
The US Travel Association—a national nonprofit organization representing the travel industry—said in a statement that it was “deeply concerned” by the announcement, which “could have a chilling effect on travel to the United States.”

2nd source: CBP recently proposed changes to its Visa Waiver Program and Electronic System for Travel Authorization and invited public comment through February 9, 2026. The proposed changes include the following:
Proposed changes include moving to a mobile-only application (the ESTA mobile app). -- Requiring each applicant to submit a photo of his or her face in addition to mandating the existing requirement of submitting the applicant’s passport biographic page. This proposed change aims to align the website application process with the mobile application process. Requiring applicants to provide a five-year history of their social media activity. This measure is intended to enhance the security and vetting process.
Requiring applicants to complete additional “high value” data fields, including:
The Electronic System for Travel Authorization ESTA - now weaponized to control and track the movement of people worldwide. Incredibly invasive is in reality an understatement. Total loss of freedom is what this represents. Virtually every detail of a person's life reviewed before 'authorized to travel". Note these things are not yet implemented but the period of time alotted for public comment came to a close yesterday 2-9-26. And of course these proposed changes would apply - currently - only to foreign entry into the USA. Tomorrow be a different story count on it.
Note also the '5-yr social media' requirement was another Trump executive order. CBP decreeing the rest of the invasive control measures - because they said. Decree by decree no other name for these 'new travel requirements' but dictatorship or totalitarian or authoritarian take your pick. What was that post about Trump four years ago? The public comment window is now closed - no doubt there would have been very few real fans of these draconian proposals, but regardless, looks certain implementing of real repressive-ness is about to go 'next level' in real time... - Email addresses used in the last ten years;
- IP addresses and metadata from electronically submitted photos”;
- Family member details (e.g., names, telephone numbers, dates of birth, places of birth, and residencies);

- Business telephone numbers used in the last five years; and
- Business email addresses used in the last ten years.
