In a 'nutshell'...
It is first a form of Jewish mysticism. A lot of books are written that provide 'exoteric' teachings on the Cabala. These are for the general public, so to speak, and is always presented as something that will bring about 'spiritual enlightenment'.
The 'esoteric' reality is something quite different. It is basically the religion of "the prince of the power of the air, the spirit that now worketh in the children of disobedience" [Eph. 2:2]
It is conducted in the realm of the "magical arts", so to speak, and really amounts basically to nothing less than sorcery.
Many adherents would not of course be very willing to admit this.
Essentially it is the 'religion' of all the secret societies, although it may take different forms. These all serve the 'god of this world':
Luke 4:5-8
"And the devil, taking him [Jesus] up into a high mountain, showed unto him all the kingdoms of the world in a moment of time.
And the devil said unto him, All this power will I give thee, and the glory of them: for that is delivered unto me; and to whomsoever I will I give it.
If thou therefore wilt worship me, all shall be thine.
And Jesus answered and said unto him, Get thee behind me, Satan: for it is written, Thou shalt worship the Lord thy God, and him only shalt thou serve."
As seen, the Lord Jesus Christ of course rejected that offer; He will take the "kingdoms of the world" unto Himself later; but for the many today who seek to accept it and get that power, and build their one world government in defiance of the living God, and make themselves out to be a god themselves, it is the means of communication; i.e. "worship"; with the one who is making the offer, the 'god of this world'.
Learn about it, but do not partake.
