Hackers speed need for password-free world
[excerpted] After the discovery of the largest ever trove of stolen Internet logins, the tech world is quickly uniting around a familiar theme — the ubiquitous Web password needs to go.
But an Obama administration program exploring ways to make alternatives to passwords commercially viable and private is caught in the political crossfire on Capitol Hill. For the third year running, House appropriators voted earlier this year to gut funding for pilot projects to find alternatives to the password.
But the program’s supporters will have new ammunition with the news that a small gang of 20-something Russian hackers from an obscure provincial city amassed a trove of 1.2 billion username and password combinations by looting 420,000 websites.
The National Strategy for Trusted Identities in Cyberspace, NSTIC, is a relatively tiny line item in the budget of the government’s technology lab. It comes in at just $16.5 million — a rounding error in the $51.2 billion appropriations bill that funds Commerce, Justice and U.S. scientific agencies. But it’s the best game in town when it comes to creating a practical alternative to the password — what’s known as an “identity ecosystem.”
Under such a password-free system, some critics imagine an Orwellian world in which omniscient identity providers track users’ every move online, eager to transmit the information to federal agencies.
In fact, the opposite of that dystopian prediction is true, supporters of a password-free world say: They argue an identity ecosystem will create a more private Web. For one thing, the number of user accounts each person creates would decrease.
