....the newly elected governor of Rhode Island, Lincoln Chafee (I) announced a ban on state employees having any contact with radio broadcasters. The move is part of a broader attack on radio broadcasters by liberals across the nation in the wake of the tragedy in Arizona.

Seeing that their crusade against the airwaves was lacking intellectual substance, Governor Chafee today announced that the ban may only be temporary. Chafee denied it had anything to do with the criticism he himself faces from radio hosts saying: “we can’t be diverted with all the nonsense on talk-radio,” adding “it’s more entertainment than journalism.”

The "ban may only be temporary" says the Rhode Island governor. Even if that were so, even if this were to turn out to be another case of two-steps-forward one-step-back, an incredible precedent is being created here.

Earth must prepare for close encounter with aliens, say scientists

UN should co-ordinate plans for dealing with extraterrestrials – and we can't guarantee that aliens will be friendly. They argue that a branch of the UN must be given responsibility for "supra-Earth affairs" and formulate a plan for how to deal with extraterrestrials, should they appear.

The comments are part of an extraterrestrial-themed edition of the Philosophical Transactions of the Royal Society A published today. In it, scientists examine all aspects of the search for extraterrestrial life, from astronomy and biology to the political and religious fallout that would result from alien contact.

Ted Peters, a professor of systematic theology at the Pacific Lutheran Theological Seminary in California, considered what might happen to the world's religions in the event of ET making contact. Conventional wisdom suggests that terrestrial religion would collapse if the existence of extraterrestrial intelligence (ETI) were confirmed, he wrote.

"Because our religious traditions formulated their key beliefs within an ancient world view now out of date, would shocking new knowledge dislodge our pre-modern dogmas? Are religious believers Earth-centric, so that contact with ET would de-centre and marginalise our sense of self-importance? Do our traditional religions rank us human beings on top of life's hierarchy, so if we meet ETI who are smarter than us will we lose our superior rank? If we are created in God's image, as the biblical traditions teach, will we have to share that divine image with our new neighbours?"

His conclusion, however, is that faith in Earth's major religions would survive intact. "Theologians will not find themselves out of a job. In fact, theologians might relish the new challenges to reformulate classical religious commitments in light of the new and wider vision of God's creation."

Saudi Arabia bans blogging without a licence

Under the new rules, to be introduced next month, all online writers - and this appears to include forums and even short messaging - will need a licence, valid for up to three years.

The Saudi government says the move is simply designed to protect society - and points out that it was already censoring content anyway. Saudi Arabia has one of the highest numbers of bloggers in the Arabic world.

Applicants for a licence need to be Saudi, at least 20 years old and to have graduated from high school. They will also need 'documents testifying to their good behaviour'. Editors of online newspapers will need to be approved by the Ministry of Information and Culture.

Anyone caught blogging without a licence will be subject to a fine of up to 100,000 Riyal ($26,665), and/or a ban - possibly forever.

The DOJ wants information dating back to Nov. 1, 2009, about Twitter user names, messages, physical and e-mail addresses, Twitter session times, IP addresses and credit card and bank account information.

White House Planning Internet ID for Americans

STANFORD, Calif. - President Obama is planning to hand the U.S. Commerce Department authority over a forthcoming cybersecurity effort to create an Internet ID for Americans, a White House official said here today.

...to centralize efforts toward creating an "identity ecosystem" for the Internet, White House Cybersecurity Coordinator Howard Schmidt said.

The announcement came at an event today at the Stanford Institute for Economic Policy Research, where U.S. Commerce Secretary Gary Locke and Schmidt spoke.

The Obama administration is currently drafting what it's calling the National Strategy for Trusted Identities in Cyberspace, which Locke said will be released by the president in the next few months.

Details about the "trusted identity" project are unusually scarce.

Schmidt stressed today that anonymity and pseudonymity will remain possible on the Internet. "I don't have to get a credential if I don't want to," he said. There's no chance that "a centralized database will emerge," and "we need the private sector to lead the implementation of this," he said.

The words “mother” and “father” will be removed from U.S. passport applications and replaced with gender neutral terminology, the State Department says.

“The words in the old form were ‘mother’ and ‘father,’” said Brenda Sprague, deputy assistant Secretary of State for Passport Services. "They are now ‘parent one’ and ‘parent two.’"

Gay rights groups are applauding the decision.

CFPB Signs Cooperation Agreement with States

The memorandum of understanding marks the first formal coordination effort between states and the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau.

The Consumer Financial Protection Bureau signed a memorandum of understanding on Tuesday with state banking regulators to coordinate supervision and implementation of consumer protection rules.

"Starting today we will work together to promote consistent examination procedures of institutions to make sure effective enforcement of state and federal consumer laws, to minimize regulatory burden and to efficiently deploy regulatory resources," said Elizabeth Warren, assistant to the president and special advisor to the secretary of the Treasury.

"We've all been confronted recently with ample evidence of haphazard and possibly illegal practices of mortgage servicing companies that have called into question home mortgage foreclosures," Warren said. "An interagency task force of the Obama administration is working to get to the bottom of these issues and many of the here today are a part of the multi state committee which is examining actions of servicers across the country...

The MOU aims to promote consistent examination procedures and enforcement of consumer protection laws. It states that state regulators and the CFPB will consult each other regarding standards, procedures and practices used by state regulators and the CFPB to coordinate examinations.

The so-called "Consumer Financial Protection Bureau" is one of those little publicized creations of the U.S. financial makeover bill passed in July of last year. That was the bill that did an 'extreme makeover' of the U.S. financial industry, giving the Federal government "expansive new authority" [here; see 'update' above also]. Well the CFPB has now set up shop and opened the doors for business. First order of business was to effectively assert financial control over the states. The papers are signed, that is accomplished.

"Starting today we will work together..." is how appointed 'czar' Warren worded it. This is being called "coordination". All in the name of "consumer protection". Hence the name of the new 'bureau'.

Absurd name aside though, it is not difficult to see what is happening here. The reality is that it gives the Federal government the power to "manage every facet of commerce under the guise of consumer protection". It "allows the government to collect data on any person operating in financial markets at any level, including the collection of personal transaction records from local banks, including customers’ addresses and ATM receipts" [here 5-23-10].

This CFPB is just another fruit of fake global financial crisis of two years ago, via the U.S. financial-remake bill of July 2010. All of which is to serve the purpose of melding the U.S. economy into the coming '666' global system. Individual state-systems cannot exist, they must be absorbed by the Federal, which in turn will then submit the whole to the global.

This is a very big deal. This is no longer future. It is underway. Far from "consumer protection", it is the building of a massive financial control network. And as they already have their hands in on the ongoing 'mortgage-chaos', no doubt when that is all said and done, they will have control of the mortgage industry nationwide, apparently exactly as planned.

UPDATED 3:40 p.m.) Maryland officials say two employees opening mail at separate state office buildings had their fingers burned when they opened packages that emitted smoke and fire.

...cabinet secretaries have been instructed to shut down their mailroom operations and not deliver any mail until an investigation is concluded.

“Both (packages) when opened … let off a small type of explosion or flame,” he said.

There are unconfirmed reports that the package — a white cardboard box, similar to those that hold checks, with five multicolored stamps — was addressed to the Maryland secretary of state, whose main offices are in the Jeffrey Building.

Administration reverses on end-of-life counseling

WASHINGTON (AP) — Reversing a potentially controversial decision, the Obama administration will drop references to end-of-life counseling from the ground rules for Medicare's new annual checkup, a White House official said Wednesday.

The latest shift on the sensitive subject comes ahead of a vote next week in the new GOP-led House to repeal President Barack Obama's landmark health care overhaul. The decision is not likely to have much impact on patients and doctors already discussing options for care in the last stages of life.

The White House official said the administration is now pulling back the language because there wasn't enough chance for all sides to comment on the change. The official spoke on condition of anonymity to discuss what has turned into an embarrassing episode for the administration.

However, many doctors and public health advocates believe the government should take a more direct role in encouraging people to plan ahead. They say it would save families the ordeal of having to make agonizing decisions when a loved one is incapacitated.

Opponents counter that such decisions are highly personal, and government should stay out. They worry that explicitly including end-of-life counseling in Medicare rules could send an indirect message that people facing serious illness should be nudged toward hospice care, giving up on seeking a cure.

Hungary (EU Presidency) Shuts Down Free Speech In Media

Draconian press laws in the EU’s new Presidency…

“”Reporting on crime that “doesn’t serve the interest of the democratic public” must be restricted to 20% of the time devoted to news.””

That would be nice wouldn’t it, simply removing the inconvenient news by not reporting it. Believe it or not, that is one of the planks of an authoritarian new media law recently introduced by a European Union country, a country that takes up the EU’s Presidency as of today.

And it gets worse.

A “media council has been created, with its chairperson being appointed for a nine-year term by the Prime-Minister, currently Fidesz (a conservative-nationalist party) leader Viktor Orban. The council consists solely of members belonging to or favourable to that ruling party and will have the power to fine television and radio stations as much as 200 million forints (about 700,000 euros) for coverage deemed in their opinion as “politically” “out of balance”. Maximum fines for national newspapers and websites were set at 25 million forints and for weeklies at 10 million.

The media council also has the right to access documents before publication. Journalists will have to disclose their sources on matters of “national security”, that is “national security” as defined by the party apparatchiks on the media council.

Another paragraph of the law reads: “any statement in the media which is qualified as an overt or covert insult of persons, nations, communities, national, ethnic, linguistic or other minorities or any majority, in addition to any church or religious groups is punishable.”

The EU six-month rotating-presidency is relatively meaningless since it is really subject to the permanent "European Council Presidency" created one year ago by the Lisbon Treaty [here and here]. That office is designed to supersede the governing rights of the 27 individual countries of the EU and bring them all under a single authority. That is a work in progress. Just last week this single authority was demonstrated to the international community with the announcement of the "EU-Wide Ban On Herbal Supplements".

Nevertheless it is telling that Hungary which assumes the six-month titular presidency beginning today is the country chosen to pass this incredible legislation creating a brand new entity called a "media counsel" with an 'appointed' head. The details are astounding, insuring an absolute lockdown on every form of published political or social dissent against essentially the NWO agenda with the punishment of outrageous fines to be levied on offenders.

It is no stretch to see that this precedent being set by the Hungarian 'presidency' is just a stepping-stone toward the NWO agenda of extending the new regulations "EU-wide"...and then worldwide.
