Midnight Cry - Huntington

Behold, the bridegroom cometh; go ye out to meet him.

MATTHEW 25:
1 "Then shall the kingdom of heaven be likened unto ten virgins, which took their lamps, and went forth to meet the bridegroom.2 And five of them were wise, and five were foolish.3 They that were foolish took their lamps, and took no oil with them: 4 But the wise took oil in their vessels with their lamps."

BEING THE SUBSTANCE OF TWO SERMONS, DELIVERED AT MONKWELL STREET MEETING FEBRUARY 14 AND 28, 1797 by William Huntington (1745-1813)

"The title given them is that of virgins, because of their outward and apparent adherence to Christ, his truth and worship, and to an open profession of his name.....My design is to handle these two sorts of virgins separately, that you may see the one from the other."

(*note: Huntington's eschatology is not 'refined' and so not completely accurate, being a very early interpretation, but is still rather novel and interesting. Nobody had it 'figured out' in 1797. Historical value. With that in mind the sermons are very useful.)

Consider this as a "midnight cry" if you will! Look around, survey the horizon, it's pitch black, spiritually and politically. The bridegroom cometh! Every person who "names the name of Christ" will fall into one of these two classes: "wise" or "foolish", as designated by the Lord Jesus Christ himself. Where do you personally, Mr./Ms. Christian 2008, stand? Are you bound up with this world and it's pursuits, or are you separated from this world unto the heavenly calling (Heb. 3:1) and the person of Christ Jesus the Lord and Savior? You may not have both, for it's not an earthly but a heavenly calling, an either/or proposition.

Here is an excellent 200+ yr. old pair of sermons which are absolutely rich and full of "meat". They are somewhat lengthy but well worth the time and effort for close study. The effort will be rewarded by the Word of God contained within. What can be more important than to be certain as to whether or not I've got "a vessel" and "oil" for that vessel. Answer: nothing! (The foolish had neither)
Can you hear "the midnight cry"?
