GE, Intel, AT&T team up to put cameras, mics in San Diego
General Electric will put cameras, microphones and sensors on 3,200 street lights in San Diego this year, marking the first large-scale use of "smart city" tools GE says can help monitor traffic and pinpoint crime, but raising potential privacy concerns.
Based on technology from GE's Current division, Intel Corp and AT&T Inc, the system will use sensing nodes on light poles to locate gunshots, estimate crowd sizes, check vehicle speeds and other tasks, GE and the city said on Wednesday. The city will provide the data to entrepreneurs and students to develop applications.
Companies expect a growing market for such systems as cities seek better data to plan and run their operations. San Diego is a test of "internet of things" [IoT] technology that GE Current provides for commercial buildings and industrial sites.
"San Diego is a very early adopter. While it's a smallish deal in dollars it's the biggest deal of this kind yet."
GE's CityIQ nodes will be rolled out starting in July and data will be available in the fall...
San Diego's city council approved the lighting in December, without discussion of potential privacy issues...

re: 'IoT - internet of things'
Totalitarian Big Brother 1984 666-preparation micromanaged people-control - this is all of that. All the biggest players behind it - GE Intel AT&T. The "IoT" is how they plan to make it happen. Internet of things? What things? Try every 'thing'. People place and yes thing. Everything wired into one huge system. Smart homes with smart meters and smart tv's and smart appliances etc. listening and recording, controlling everything indoors, all wired into the same control center as the 'smart street lights' that track and listen and record every 'thing' outdoors. Got Windows 10 computer or not-so 'smartphone'? Yup...it's all about plugging the individual personally into the IoT. Every mandatory update one step deeper into the void. But, just let 'Cortana' tell you what to think and do [link] and you will get along just fine.
San Diego the first large-scale test. Highly significant this. 3200 that is a lot of street lights. Anywhere you go watched and listened to. Including vehicle license plates imaged down every street keeping ongoing records of who goes where when. The whole world is of course the plan though. Which means IoT snooper-streets coming to where you live soon without a doubt.
Know about it. Rev. 18:4

Yet they say, The LORD shall not see, neither shall the God of Jacob regard it. Understand, ye brutish among the people: and ye fools, when will ye be wise? He that planted the ear, shall he not hear? he that formed the eye, shall he not see? ... And he shall bring upon them their own iniquity, and shall cut them off in their own wickedness; yea, the LORD our God shall cut them off'
