Spurgeon, Luther On Sovereign Election

"... and I will go as far as Martin Luther, in that strong assertion of his, where he says, 'If any man doth ascribe of salvation, even the very least, to the free will of man, he knoweth nothing of grace, and he hath not learnt Jesus Christ aright.' It may seem a harsh sentiment; but he who in his soul believes that man does of his own free will turn to God, cannot have been taught of God, for that is one of the first principles taught us when God begins with us, that we have neither will nor power, but that He gives both [Eph. 2:1]; that He is 'Alpha and Omega' in the salvation of men."

Charles H. Spurgeon from the sermon 'Free Will A Slave' (1855) referring to Luther's book 'The Bondage of the Will'

--------------------------------------------------
2Tim 1:9 'Who hath saved us, and called us with an holy calling, not according to our works, but according to his own purpose and grace, which was given us in Christ Jesus before the world began'

    I'll try to keep it short (it won't be) but please bare with me here.
    You are correct on ALL counts
    God love you,
    I do not know why, but I just felt you might be going through some serious thoughts and discoveries and needed a reminder of the glorious future ahead for those who love the Lord.
    When I'm going through difficulties the thought brings me peace and joy then a smile comes on my face knowing this Satanic old world so full of deception won't last too much longer.
    I was saved years ago but as far as discovery of complete deception in this world, I'm just a babe. I "red pilled" in 2006 and ever since then have sought the truth. Not only Biblically but historically. The more I studied the deeper it went till I nearly lost my mind. I walked the streets for days not knowing where I was, what I ate, or even if I used the bathroom! I was in constant communication in prayer with my Lord many hours a day and night and if I did not have the Lord, maybe I never would have come out of it.
    When a old man (over 70) learns all he was taught in school was a lie (I'm well "educated") it's a total betrayal of trust. Evil was everywhere I looked and you know what I mean!
    The Word of God says to come out of her and come out I did.(still trying)
    I had removed all TV and cable from the house in 2001, by 2007 shut all banking down, credit cards were paid off and run through the shedder, all cell phones were burnt up, mail stopped, started a very large garden which fed six homes 365 days a year, and the list goes on to long for space.
    {Then "they" attacked)
    This is the first time since 2004 I have entered anything into a computer. I just use it to study and read but your web site touched me. If you would like to know what happened you'll have to arrange a different method of communications.(you really should know you could be in some danger) Be VERY Careful Tom, it's not a game one can win.The Word is clear we won't win.(not down here) You should understand by now they want you (Christians) dead. Timeline Rev 2 & 3
    Watched a Sunday sermon by Mc Arthur today. Interesting! He said" I don't want freedom of religion" (when told by the new boss) "Mans religion sends millions to hell, We stand for the truth".
    Nice find with Spurgeon from the sermon 'Free Will A Slave' , Yes, We are saved by grace through faith, Ephesians 2:8 He extends the grace as well as the faith to receive it. Man cannot do anything.
    We were chosen before the world began. Ephesians 1:4
    Christ did not die for the worlds sins, only some. Why would the Father let the Son suffer needlessly to those who rejected it?
    You know Tom? That took me much time to learn that, it's not really taught is it? When meditating on my Saviors suffering it upset me greatly to think he died in vain for the unrepentant and then He led me to His word.
    Nice web site you might check out. All the old Servants of God who knew great depth. These are the men who came out of the worlds religion in England (C o E) 1750-1920

  3. Martin Luther's battle hymn of the Reformation

    A mighty fortress is our God,
    a bulwark never failing;
    our helper he, amid the flood
    of mortal ills prevailing.

    For still our ancient foe
    does seek to work us woe;
    his craft and power are great,
    and armed with cruel hate,
    on earth is not his equal.

    Did we in our own strength confide,
    our striving would be losing,
    were not the right Man on our side,
    the Man of God's own choosing.
    You ask who that may be?
    Christ Jesus, it is he;
    Lord Sabaoth his name,
    from age to age the same;
    and he must win the battle.

    And though this world, with devils filled,
    should threaten to undo us,
    we will not fear, for God has willed
    his truth to triumph through us.

    The prince of darkness grim,
    we tremble not for him;
    his rage we can endure,
    for lo! his doom is sure;
    one little word shall fell him.

    4 That Word above all earthly powers
    no thanks to them abideth;
    the Spirit and the gifts are ours
    through him who with us sideth.

    Let goods and kindred go,
    this mortal life also;
    the body they may kill:
    God's truth abideth still;
    his kingdom is forever!

    Luke 21:36
    “Watch ye therefore, and pray always, that ye may be accounted worthy to escape all these things that shall come to pass, and to stand before the Son of man.”

    Sun and moon will be replaced
    With the light of Jesus'”face
    And I will not be ashamed
    For my Saviour knows my name.

    Amen, may it be so.

  4. To anon (1st comment),

    a few things in response... as for opposition, well we wrestle not against flesh and blood, and the weapons of our warfare are not carnal but mighty through God (so we go that way) - also if the LORD opens a door no man can shut it [Rev. 3:8]; in this world the believer at times may have to "endure hardness, as a good soldier of Jesus Christ" ... but the battle is the LORD's ... he will accomplish his purposes... so we stay within these boundaries... and will see "the righteousness of God revealed from faith to faith" [Rom. 1:17] ...and always press on

    also a note re: MacArthur - an older post on this blog, some important info fyi: MacArthur 666

    even so, come, Lord Jesus [Rev. 22:20]

    Thanks, now can you imagine 10,000 saints singing that!
    acappella is wonderful, no instruments needed.
    That was one of my special hymns, I hum it almost daily for the following reasons

    2 Timothy 1:6.12
    6]For God hath not given us the spirit of fear; but of power, and of love, and of a sound mind.
    12]For the which cause I also suffer these things: nevertheless I am not ashamed: for I know whom I have believed, and am persuaded that he is able to keep that which I have committed unto him against that day.

    Something to think about for those who call themselves, "Christians"
    What have we committed to Him? Everything?
    When life is going just fine, we don't really think about it do we? Our lives, ours very souls entrusted to Him, our all in all?
    Our Lords costly free gift cannot be brought but it needs to be appreciated. When we freely offer something to our Lord in thanksgiving things change and our walk with Him becomes richer and much fuller.
    Paul was in chains when he wrote this, as of now we are all still free (thank God) But that may change soon. Have we thought of what that gift means to us? Have we thought what we will be ready to give up? Have we thought about a sifting between the wheat and tares?

    I'm really nobody, just a old sinner saved by grace.Most certainly I'm no Paul.
    Last May my entire extended family told me I'm a crazy old religious nut case and legally divorced me from the family. Gone was my home of 45 years and a girl I raised since she was 6 weeks old. (now 21) I helped led her to Christ. She made a choice. There was no choice for me to make. Nothing in this world is worth giving up Christ.. For me to live is Christ. He is everything.
    Point that I want to make is that if the Lord tarries much longer how many of you can or will be in the same situation? I pray it won't be so .2 THESSALONIANS 2:7
    “For the mystery of iniquity doth already work: only he who now letteth will let, until he be taken out of the way.”
    3)Let no man deceive you by any means: for that day shall not come, except there come a falling away first,
    Beloved Saints, Get your spiritual house in order and stay strong in the Lord!!

    You know life is all script, I've known for over 20 years.
    (sorry, I had to be sure you were a true Christian) Other than that, everything I posted is true. Look, things are moving quickly, many true Christians have been studying this for 28-30 years ever go to "Watch unto prayer" if not please go.Jans a real brain, devout born-again came out of the Roman Catholic church with all their evil and exposed it back to Babylonia times. ZIONIST JEWS UP TO THEIR NECK WITH THIS(Barb. is on her own now, Janet went home. (Willingly?) they are warning the individual Christians to come out of ALL CHURCHES that have tax exempt status, That is how they control them. Like always it's the money. The evanj. church has been almost completely taken over by none other than CIA. yeah, get a load of that!!!! You cannot get a 499c for any church unless you pledge your loyalty
    Sending you a unrelated item to look over. Miles has been exposing all this just for fun for 15 years, non-christian but batting about 95% true. I might be way ahead of you. If not, let me know so I don't work so hard.

  8. to dj,

    Oh..you are testing me ... well that is strange because that's what 'spiritual discernment' is for. Anyway normally a person might do that if they thought they wanted to confide in another person about something, but please do not think that there is anything that you need to confide in me for. You can relax no effort is required to help me out, i'm up-to-speed on all the various issues (like the links you provided) - i've done the homework (including Aho's writings).

    The times are perilous yes...but it is still true that sufficient unto the day is the evil thereof

  9. Where the paschal blood is poured,
    Death's dark angel sheathes his sword;
    Israel's hosts triumphant go
    Through the wave that drowns the foe.

    John Calvin, a very influential early Reformed theologian, believed the Lord's Supper fed Christians with the spiritual food of union with Christ. He believed that in the Supper Christians feed on Christ's flesh, which he saw as an inexplicable miracle.

    Eucharistic Real Presence: Luther’s Magnificent Defense
    September 21, 2017 by Dave Armstrong
    ***
    From my 2004 book, The Catholic Verses: 95 Bible Passages That Confound Protestants [two alternate renderings of Luther quotations used]

    At the Lamb's high feast we sing
    Praise to our victorious King,
    Who hath washed us in the tide
    Flowing from His pierced side;
    Praise we Him, whose love divine,
    Gives His sacred Blood for wine,
    Gives His Body for the feast,
    Christ the Victim, Christ the Priest.

    Where the Paschal blood is poured,
    Death's dark angel sheathes his sword
    Israel's hosts triumphant go
    Through the wave that drowns the foe.
    Praise we Christ, whose blood was shed,
    Paschal victim, paschal bread;
    With sincerity and love
    Eat we manna from above.

    Mighty victim from the sky!
    Hell's fierce powers beneath Thee lie;
    Thou hast conquer'd in the fight,
    Thou hast brought us life and light:
    Now no more can death appall,
    Now no more the grave enthrall;
    Thou hast opened paradise,
    And in Thee Thy saints shall rise.

    Easter triumph, Easter joy,
    Sin alone can this destroy;
    From sin's power do Thou set free
    Souls new-born, O Lord, in Thee.
    Hymns of glory and of praise,
    Risen Lord, to Thee we raise;
    Holy Father, praise to Thee,
    With the Spirit, ever be.

  10. Very briefly as this is not a debate - first: "real presence" is not one and the same as the Catholic doctrine of transubstantiation. Luther and Calvin had their separate views on that topic but both rejected completely the Catholic teaching of the wine and wafer literally becoming the actual flesh and blood. Ultimately their views are not relevant to the question of whether the doctrine itself can or cannot be supported by scripture. On the cross the Lord Jesus Christ said "it is finished". That statement does not need any exposition. The Catholic church though says 'No it is not finished at all - we will bring you down from heaven bodily transformed into the wine and wafer and re-sacrifice you at every Catholic mass - millions and millions of times, for centuries...and then eat you'.

    This is a very dark - even occult-like ritual. There is not a single verse of scripture to even suggest such a thing. The very notion of so-called 'transubstantiation' contradicts horribly every verse of scripture speaking of the finished work of Christ on the cross of Calvary - of which there are many. Note: after the actual crucifixion of the Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ - which was the ONCE-only (never to be repeated) offering of the body [Heb. 10:10] ...no one drank his blood and ate his body.

    This Catholic doctrine of transubstantiation and continual-sacrifce - no matter how they spin it or package it up with semantics - is 'another gospel'. And a very disturbing one at that. Galatians chapter one speaks to this sort of thing.

    *What is said above is not to offend, but to deal with the topic plainly - because the Catholic should step back and think it through for a time... Psalms 119:18

    [and one further note: 'real presence' is also not found in scripture - i.e. another false teaching (pagan-like even). The truly regenerate believer is already indwelt by the Holy Ghost - to 'ingest the presence' could add nothing]
